Pathway to Canada – Part 6

Today, I will be writing about the Sponsorship Program, a sure pathway to moving permanently to Canada.
One of the aims of Canadian immigration is to reunite families and to achieve this goal, the Sponsorship programs were put in place. These are programs that exist by virtue of having a family member in Canada who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, however, it is not all encompassing. If you are in Canada as a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, and you have a spouse/common-law partner/conjugal partner and/or dependent child(ren) (under 22 years old and not yet married) outside Canada, you can sponsor them to come and live with you in Canada, under the Family Class sponsorship program. If you are in Canada as a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, and you have a spouse/common-law partner/conjugal partner and/or dependent child(ren) under 22 years old and not yet married) inside Canada, either visiting or studying, you can sponsor them under the Sponsorship In-Canada Class. You may be able to sponsor an eligible relative in very specific situations like if they are an orphaned sibling, related to you by blood, under 18 years of age and are single. As a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, you can also sponsor your parents or grandparents, under the Parents and Grandparents’ sponsorship program, to become permanent residents in Canada.
Generally, to be a sponsor, you must be at least 18 years of age, you must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident and reside in Canada, you must be able to show that you have enough funds to support the people you intend to sponsor- this is not necessary if you are sponsoring your spouse/common-law partner/conjugal partner and/or dependent child(ren), but required for all other forms of sponsorships. You must also sign an undertaking to provide the basic requirements for the sponsored person and in the case of parents and grandparents sponsorship, you must meet the Low-Income Cut-off (LICO) + 30% for 3 previous taxation years and provide evidence of such.
Some provincial programs like the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) also allows for sponsorship of a family member if the sponsor has been a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and has resided in Manitoba for at least 1 year. This is one of the provincial nominee programs that is peculiar to the province of Manitoba. The provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta also allow for bringing a family member to Canada, should the applicants meet all other requirements.
